Early this morning, reading an article in a journal of Scripture and theology called Ex Auditu. Looking at the bibliography and circling three books I would like to read. But what about the three books I bought last month? (I’ve only gotten into one of them.)

What to do? I can only think of one solution. I said to Patty, “There are so many books I want to read. I have to quit my job.”

She patted me sympathetically, and said, “Whatever you need to do.” (At least she didn’t say, “Yes, dear.”)

I note the death of William Safire, who I occasionally agreed with, but always respected, because his arguments were always well-reasoned and fair. A far cry from the stringent, extreme voices that get most attention now as political commentators.
