Is it OK if I’m not sympathetic with Al Groh, who was the University of Virginia
football coach until yesterday? He was relieved of his duties. But he’s been paid $2 million a year in recent years, and he’s now being paid a severance of $4.3 million, at age 65, for pretty much failing at his job. (Don’t a lot of people retire at age 65? He’s being paid a severance to retire. Where can I get in on that action?)
More and more I appreciate college athletics at the William and Mary level. The coaches are paid more than ordinary human beings, but “student athlete” doesn’t have to be in quotes, as it does at big-time athletic schools. At William and Mary, JMU, Richmond, and other schools at this level, the athletes are truly expected to be students as their first priority. Around campus, you actually see them with all the other students, going to class, working on their graduation requirements!
Sounds like college to me.
