When was the last time that, in Williamsburg, Virginia, the temperature stayed so low that an inch of snow remained on the ground for days? Not in recent memory.

At one time, decades ago, this would not have been unusual. My wife, Patty, born and raised in Williamsburg, tells stories of Lake Matoaka freezing so solid each winter that folks enjoyed ice skating on it!

Meanwhile, I’m very thankful for a snug house, with a furnace that provides heat. Patty and I watched the movie, “The Soloist” the other night — a true story about a Julliard-educated musician who became homeless because of mental illness, and of the newspaper writer who befriended him on the streets of Los Angeles. Highly recommended.
