Generosity/Stewardship – Time and Talent

 

There are many ways to share your time and talent at St. Stephen!

 

  • Acolytes and Crucifers – teen-aged assistants to the Pastor during worship (Cookie Baker, 220-2459).
  • Affirmation of Baptism – Two-year program for students in 7th and 8th grade – and their parents.  Classes meet during the school year on Sunday evenings at 6:30 (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Al-Anon – meet in the Conference Room/Library on Friday afternoons (3:00: Tanya, 229-6493).
  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) – meet in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings (8:00: Doug, 647-1555) and on Saturday afternoons (2:00: Chris, 869-3779).
  • Altar Guild – members prepare the altar for worship and the celebration of the sacraments (Carol Harman, 258-1175 or Karen Shoberg: 565-1264).
  • Alternative Giving – During Advent, the Alternative Giving program suggests ways to give charitable gifts in honor of others (Jean Kuhn, 253-0547).
  • Baptisms – The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is celebrated during worship. Baptisms are scheduled throughout the year (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Bible Study/Book Study – offered occasionally throughout the year (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Bread Bakers – members bake bread each week for use in celebrating Holy Communion (Ursula Recktenwald, 645-7500).
  • Bulletins – Sunday bulletins are finalized on Wednesdays in the Church office.  Items for the bulletin must be received by Wednesday at 12:00 Noon. (Sandy Peterkin, 229-6688 or office@saintstephenlutheran.net).
  • Campus Ministry – see Lutheran Student Association.
  • Cantors – assist in the worship services in chanting parts of the liturgy (Michael Monaco, 229-6688).
  • Care Groups – Our congregation is divided into 12 Care Groups, which reach out to our sick, homebound, and grieving with cards, food and visits (Diane Bean, 565-7717, Geri Bass, 565-0596, Charlene Smith 564-9067, or Leah Hardenbergh, 229-3327).
  • Christian Education – A ministry team which oversees Faith Formation Classes for all ages, Vacation Bible School…(Nelia Heide, 345-2979)
  • Choirs – three choirs enhance our worship at St. Stephen: one at each of the two worship services (8:30 AM and 11:00 AM), and a children’s choir that serves as our choir quarterly (Michael Monaco, 229-6688).
  • Church Council – Elected leaders who provide oversight and vision for the congregation.  Meets second Tuesday of the month (Jane deSolms, 565-5646).
  • Communion Assistants – assist the Pastor in distribution of the wine during the celebration of the sacrament (Sandy Peterkin, 229-6688).
  • Counseling – Pastor Ballentine is available to meet with individuals and families in times of crisis and discernment (229-6688).  For long-term counseling, contact the Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center (873-2273).
  • Devotional BookletsChrist in Our Home and The Word in Season are available in the narthex for personal daily use (Robin Hudson, 229-6688).
  • Dining IN Groups – Members gather in homes to share a meal!  (Rudy Stegmann, 259-0810 and Karen Shoberg, 565-1264).
  • Dining OUT Group – Members gather in area restaurants to share a meal. (Chuck and Ginny Hilbinger, 7572590343).
  • Dorcas CircleWomen’s fellowship group.
  • EarthKeepers – Care of the Earth and reducing the ecological footprint that we, as individuals, leave on this earth is the EarthKeepers goal (Robert Camp, 903-4989).
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – The national Lutheran church body of which St. Stephen is a member (www.elca.org).
  • Faith Formation – Christian education for children and adults held during the school year from 9:45-10:45 AM – between our two worship services (Robin Hudson, 229-6688).
  • Financial Secretary –The Financial Secretary maintains all giving records for St. Stephen (Susan Britcher, 565-5646).
  • First Communion – A class for children of all ages to prepare them to receive Holy Communion for the first time (Robin Hudson, 229-6688)
  • Flowers for Worship – members are invited to sponsor flowers each Sunday for our worship (Sandy Peterkin, 229-6688).
  • Flower Ministry – Members bring the flowers that have graced our worship space to individuals who are sick or shut-in (Janice Svendsen, 258-0244).
  • Gardeners – Members keep the gardens tended and the lawn mowed during the summer months (Chris and Randy Punchard, 565-0349).
  • Girl Scouts – Troop 1001 meets in the Fellowship Hall on Thursday evenings (6:00: Alaina Kremer, 258-1345).
  • Greeters – Members welcome worshipers as they arrive for worship (Jo Austin, 220-9696).
  • Lectors – Worship leaders who read the scripture lessons (Barbara Weekes, 220-8857).
  • Library – Volunteers are needed to help with organizing books in the library (Paula Agor, 294-5134).
  • Men of St. Stephen (MOST) – a fellowship for men of the congregation, meeting on the second Saturday of the month for breakfast and a program (Art Dorsey, 564-0209).
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness – Williamsburg Area – Support group for those with friends or family dealing with mental illness; meet in the Fellowship Hall on Tuesday evenings (Bryan Anderson, 903-3130).
  • New Member Classes – A class for those thinking about joining St. Stephen (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Nursery – A professionally staffed nursery is provided on Sunday mornings for both worship services, and during the Faith Formation Hour.  Volunteers are also needed to supplement the paid staff (Mary Ann Beard, 804-966-9244).
  • Overeaters Anonymous (OA) – meet in the Youth Room, Monday nights at 7:00 PM (Angelo, 564-7871).
  • Photographers – Individuals who take photographs at church functions and upload them on the church website (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • The Quill – Monthly newsletter of St. Stephen, deadline is the 15th of each month (Anne Schone, 229-8674; Thord Einarsen, 564-8262; or office@saintstephenlutheran.net).
  • Recycling – A coordinator is needed to ensure that weekly pick-up is achieved (Sandy Peterkin, 229-6688).
  • Sarah Circle – Women’s fellowship group.
  • Simply Giving – A stewardship opportunity by which members can have their offering automatically withdrawn from their bank accounts (Susan Britcher, 565-5646).
  • Social Ministry – Serving the community – locally, nationally, globally (Jean Kuhn, 253-0547).
  • Sound System – Recordings of the worship services are made each Sunday for use by shut-ins (Arnie Janot, 221-0289).
  • St. Stephen Preschool – Serving Williamsburg for more than 40 years, St. Stephen Preschool has an excellent reputation for teaching children, ages three through five (June Brantley, 220-0701).
  • Stewardship Ministry – Giving time, talent, and resources to St. Stephen (Gail Bossenga, 565-6366).
  • Tellers – Volunteers who secure, count and record our weekly offering (Jack Harris, 229-7504).
  • Theologian-in-Residence – This endowed program has brought noted theologians to St. Stephen for a weekend symposium for the past 13 years. (Cliff Henderson, 229-2546).
  • Ushers – Leaders who welcome worshipers, and assist with the flow of the service (Reed and Karen Nester, 229-2017; Keith Egloff, 229-7859).
  • Vacation Bible School – Weeklong summer educational experience for children ages 3-5th grade (Robin Hudson, 229-6688).
  • Virginia Synod – The state synodical body of which St. Stephen is a member (www.vasynod.org).
  • Website – An evangelism tool created and maintained by volunteers to spread information about St. Stephen (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Weddings – Pastor Ballentine is available to assist with premarital counseling for members and to help couples with their plans (Pastor Ballentine, 229-6688).
  • Worship and Music Ministry – Has oversight of the worship and music at St. Stephen (Mary Ann Beard, 804-966-9244).
  • Youth Groups – Middle and High School youth who participate in various events, retreats, and other fellowship and service opportunities (Robin Hudson, 229-6688).
