The Church and Congregation are Our Ministries

We freely—and with joyful hearts—give our time and talents to St. Stephen Lutheran Church. We invite all who are interested in learning more to speak to Pastor Griffin or Sandy at the office (757-229-6688) in order to be directed to the current point person of the ministry.   • Acolytes and Crucifers: teenagers who assist the Pastor during worship.
  • Altar Guild: members who prepare the altar for worship and the celebration of the sacraments.
  • Bread Bakers: members who bake bread each week for use in celebrating Holy Communion.
  • Campus Ministry: members who assist the Lutheran Student Association.
  • Cantors: members who assist in the worship services by chanting parts of the liturgy.
  • Care Groups: members who reach out to the sick, homebound and grieving with cards, food, and visits. The congregation is divided into 12 Care Groups.
  • Christian Education: a team that oversees Faith Formation classes for all ages.
  • Choirs: members who provide their voices to our worship services.
  • Church Council: elected leaders who provide oversight and vision for the congregation.
  • Communion Assistants: members who assist the Pastor in distribution of the wine during the celebration of the sacrament.
  • Faith Formation: members who provide Christian education to children and adults from September through May.
  • Financial Secretary: a member who maintains all giving records for St. Stephen.
  • Flowers for Worship: any member who sponsors the flowers for a Sunday worship.
  • Flower Ministry: members who bring the flowers that have graced our worship space to individuals who are sick or shut-in.
  • Gardeners: members who keep the gardens tended and the lawn mown during the summer months.
  • Greeters: members who welcome worshippers as they arrive for worship.
  • Lectors: members who read the scripture lessons.
  • Library: members who help to organize the books in the library.
  • Nursery Assistant: members who assist the paid staff in the nursery on Sunday mornings.
  • Photographers: members who take photographs at church functions and upload them on the church website.
  • The Quill: members who gather and edit articles for the monthly newsletter.
  • Sound System: members who work the sound system at worship services.
  • Tellers: members who secure, count and record our weekly offering.
  • Ushers: members who welcome worshippers  and assist with the flow of the service.
  • Worship & Music: members who oversee the worship and music at St. Stephen.
